Edge cards painting is the process of applying pantone ink to the side of Cotton or Silk Cards. Since Silk Cards are extremely thick (48 pt-3 layers for design option), the sides have canvas space for the ink to show a true visibility. Both of the cards below use the same ink color for both the painted edges and the content of the business card. Cotton Business Cards have the option of a 16pt thick card and a ultra thick 45 pt layer card. Both edge surfaces are perfectly suited for showcasing painted edges and grabbing the attention of your prospective clients.

We often say that is wrong to go over-the-edge. Correct, but what if we put this in a different perspective and use it from a printing point of view with Edge Cards. Emphasizing the edge can bring a new light and a different and unique aspect. Let’s be specific and make a little light. Usually when somebody chooses to design his business cards, they want to go classic. They want to create the image they expect the clients want. Sometimes going classic and traditional is not what you are or what you want to offer. Thinking outside the box makes your business wanted in the market. So why not doing the same thing when it comes to your business cards.
Take it to another level. Go adventurous and use your favorite color or even better, go with the rainbow. We are a huge fan of Edge Cards for a bold pop of color on Business Cards and Wedding Invitations. While edge painting is a commonly used technique, there is a whole mystery surrounding the process.
The Process of Edge Cards painting
The edge painting process takes place after all graphics and text have been printed and all paper materials cut down to size. It’s better to make sure the blades are especially nice and sharp when trimming out cards that are going to be edge painted.
Tips and tricks
Most printers recommend thicker paper – 160 lb and up – for the best result with Edge Cards.
Edge painting can be done on thinner paper too, but the heavier paper will show a better color and saturation of the ink. They also recommend darker or more saturated colors, but there is a risk. The colors may bleed SLIGHTLY to the surface of the cards.
We recommend to think bright. Try red, sky bleu or even bright neon or metallic foils! Just keep in mind that there might be a slight variations of the color since most printers mix inks manually for a specific Pantone color.
